Largest-ever genetic study of depression reveals new treatment possibilities
In January 2025, researchers from Australia and around the world published the largest genetic study of depression—analysing data from nearly 5 million people.
The team identified almost 700 genetic variants linked to depression, including over 50 discovered directly from the Australian Genetics of Depression Study (AGDS).
Why this is important:
- Understanding risk: Depression is influenced by many small genetic effects working together.
- New treatment leads: Some genetic signals point to biological systems targeted by existing drugs for chronic pain, inflammation, and sleep disorders like narcolepsy - opening the door to repurposing medications for depression, potentially speeding up the development of effective therapies.
- Personalised care: While more research and clinical trials are needed, this is a major step toward tailored mental health treatments.
Thank you to all AGDS and QIMR Berghofer participants—your contributions make discoveries like this possible!
