Professor Vicki Whitehall always knew she wanted to be a scientist and research cancer. A visit to QIMR Berghofer in 1991 as a high school student inspired her more than three-decades-long career researching bowel cancer at the Institute.

From her early days on a vacation scholarship in the mid-1990s, she now leads her own lab, the Conjoint Gastroenterology Group.

Here, she reflects on her proudest research achievements so far, and her goal of reducing the terrible statistics for bowel cancer, a disease that claims the lives of more than 5,000 Australians each year.
