Sun Balance Project

Balancing the harms and benefits of sun exposure

About the Sun Balance Project

Sun exposure has harms and benefits. It causes skin cancer but also leads to vitamin D production and may have other benefits. The harms and benefits of sun exposure are not the same for all people, and it can be tricky to know how to get the balance right.

In 2024 The Australian Skin and Skin Cancer Research Centre released new guidelines, backed by key organisations, that recognise these differences and consider the diversity of Australia’s population.

The Sun Balance Project aims to develop and test resources tailored to people's personal skin cancer risk, to help all Australians make informed choices about sun exposure, sun protection, and vitamin D supplementation.
