Profile

Sam Chamberlain is an academic psychiatrist with a particular interest in impulsive and compulsive symptoms. These are symptoms in which people have difficulty resisting urges and/or habits, leading to distress and impairment in day-to-day life. His work is 'translational' - which means he uses a variety of scientific methodologies to better understand the causes of these symptoms and how to treat them.

Professor Chamberlain founded and directs the NHS Southern Gambling Treatment Clinic, which provides support for people affected by gambling-related harms across the South East of England. He also leads a specialist NHS Clinic for Impulsive and Compulsive Disorders in the wider sense.  These clinical services have a  strong focus on research and innovation, in close partnership with the University of Southampton Department of Psychiatry.
